Cam Is No Claytons Cross Country Runner
The in-form athlete of the Victorian Cross Country League season, Cameron Clayton, made it two wins for the 2015 winter with a narrow victory in the Birdsland 5km on Sunday. Cam, whose better form has always been in the shorter track events, has adjusted to the longer distances with ease. Sunday’s win comes on the back of his win at Karkarook Park in April, also over 5km. Cam, from the Hipworth stable, followed the early leader, Phil O’Brien, for the major part of the sealed handicap before heading him in the last kilometre to finish seven seconds clear and record the fastest overall time of 16:14.
After the amended handicap times were subtracted Joel Donnar finished second, his best run for the season. Ian Cayzer was third on handicaps just ahead of the very consistent Andrew lane, inches to the good of first year runner Brock Ellett. Fraser Murray, the race sponsor, was next in with Adina Morrow and Phillip O’Brien not far behind. Irene James and Mark Beavis both maintained their consistent seasons with top ten finishes. Matthew Barker was the winner of the first unplaced first year runner’s award and Gerry Adams the first unplaced novice. The fastest of the females was Laura Finnerty with a run of 20:16.
The VCCL community would like to thank the generous sponsorship that Fraser Murray provided for Sunday’s event. Fraser, along with nine year son Callum, combined to take home the Family Feud trophy for the Murray family. No doubting Callum was the star of the combination with a very handy 25:36.
This Sunday the VCCL combine with the Bendigo Athletic Club for the annual George Flack Advisory Classic at Woodvale in Bendigo. Start time is 11am. The presentations will be made and refreshments taken at the Woodvale oval.
The following Sunday is the 16th Westgate Park 5km sealed handicap also with an 11am start.
