Murray Banks Another Win
Fraser Murray, winner of the 2015 Jayen Engineers Handicap.
Fraser Murray put the polish on a very consistent 2015 VCCL season with a solid run to take out the 3rd Jayen Engineering 5km at Woodlands Park on Sunday morning. Runners were faced with a “biting” wind at Greenvale and were most appreciative of the 5km event guaranteeing as little time as possible out on the course. Fraser, after a narrow one second defeat at Myrniong, made sure of Sunday’s win when he charged to the lead with a kilometre to travel and had seven seconds to spare on the finish line. In his second season with the club, Fraser recorded his second win, his previous being the Presidents Handicap at Westerfolds Park last year. Murray has taken to the VCCL style of handicap racing with ease and has gradually improved his times over all distances this season.
Gemma Hall held second place on the line, holding out a very determined Ian Cayzer over the last one hundred metres. Andrew Lane was fourth across the line, making it eleven top ten finishes for the season. Craig Harris and Stephen Menzies hit the line together with Craig just holding a narrow margin for fifth. Gary Hall was seventh making it five novice runners in the top seven placings. Matt Grant, Leon Brooks and Richie Polkinghorne completed the top ten. The fastest times were Michael Marantelli (16:09) from Robert Eppinger (17:01) with Corina Kapusta once again the fastest female award (19:07).
The Victorian Cross Country League would like to thank the generous sponsorship of Jayen Engineering, making it the richest 5km on the calendar.
This week the VCCL heads to Brimbank Park for the George Perdon 10 Mile Sealed Handicap, start time 10am. There will also be a 6.5k sweepstakes race for those not wishing to run the 10 miles.
