The VCCL Enters a New Era

The Victorian Cross Country League season is under way and with the changing athletic landscape the club has implemented changes to retain its membership and entice new members.

Race one, the Jells Park 6.5m sealed handicap, was conducted as a VCCL club race under normal race conditions with the winner Troy Atkins coming off a very successful track season. Troy, amongst other wins, was a comfortable victor in the Stawell 3200m handicap conducted by the Victorian Athletic League. At Jells Park Troy defeated Ash Cowan by thirty six seconds with Sean Quilty in third place another sixteen seconds away. Fastest time awards went to Michael Marantelli (21:21) and Brigitte Seeley (25:28).

Event two on the 2018 calendar, Athletics Victoria Cross Country 6km Relays, was also at Jells Park where the VCCL, officially now a registered AV club, had two teams competing. Our division four team of Michael Marantelli, Ash Cowen, Dan Lawlor, Oscar Robinson and Joel Donnar ran a great team’s event to finish second to the powerful St Kevin’s team. It was a sterling effort considering that St Kevin’s had the services of Alex Rowe and Adam Pyke. The second VCCL team of Les Williams, Gary Blake, Julian and Craig Harris took the honours with fifty seconds to spare and now sit atop the leader board in division seven.

The VCCL club race conducted as part of the relays and open to all VCCL members, regardless of their AV club, was won by Sean Quilty (Doncaster) from Ash Cowan (VCCL) and Ian Cayzer (South Melb). Michael Marantelli was the fastest of the members with a run of 19:02.

This week the Victorian Cross Country League will be staging our first ever VCCL combined parkrun. All VCCL members will be considered in the Australia wide sealed handicap with each venue given a time allowance, depending on the venues history. To be eligible VCCL members must nominate VCCL as their club. Although every venue is eligible, this week’s “home” venue for members to meet is Frogs Hollow in Endeavour Hills.

If you haven’t run at parkrun before, make sure you complete the free registration at and don’t forget your barcode.

Members please nominate your favourite parkrun and a date as a “home” venue. Send requests to We will publish a roster as the dates are filled.

The VCCL is looking for AV registered athletes who wish to compete with the club in the AV relays during the 2018 season. The VCCL needs to know as soon as possible. We are hoping to enter a Division four team along with two division seven teams, an open Women’s team, over 60’s team and over 40’s team. Also the possibility of an over 40’s women’s team.
