VCCL Celebrates Firsts at parkrun and St Anne’s

The Victorian Cross Country League, after eighty five years of competition, competed in its first parkrun on Saturday morning April 28th. Club members, Australia wide who nominated the VCCL as their club were eligible for prize money. With suburban members competing against others at venues as far east as Sale, along the coast at Inverloch and Ocean Grove, Wanneroo north of Perth and outer Melbourne suburbs such as Sunbury, a system has been devised to give all runners an equal chance of winning the cash prizes.

With twenty club members making up the field, Irene James, racing at Frog Hollow, was the first parkrun handicap winner. Les Williams competing from Sale was six seconds behind Irene and Sean Quilty, first across the line at Frog Hollow, finished third overall. Joel Donnar was the fastest of our club members with a time of 16:32 (Lillydale Lake). Brigitte Humphreys was the fastest of the ladies, running 19:00 around Albert Park.

The next parkrun event for VCCL athletes will be conducted on Saturday 12th May with all venues eligible but Coburg Lake being the nominated venue for those wishing to catch up with fellow members.
The VCCL, now an official Athletics Victoria club, also had members racing last Saturday 5th May at St Anne’s Winery Myrniong over an 8km course. As was the case with the club’s relay results earlier in the season our two teams ran extremely well in their respective divisions. The Division four team (Michael Marantelli, Oscar Robinson, Ash Cowan, Dan Lawlor and Matt Grant) won their division and now hold a two point lead over St Stephen’s in the season’s team tally. Although racing as a novice team this season our division four team were overall the eighth fastest team. The VCCL division seven team (Craig Harris, Leon Brooks, Fraser Murray and Gary Blake) also had a good win and remain undefeated in their division. Our next AV competition will be at Cruden Farm, Langwarrin, for a 12k event on Saturday May 26th. Entries close with Athletics Victoria on Wednesday 23th May at 11.59 am.

The next VCCL club event is the time honoured Rendina Family 8km Classic at Warringal Park Heidelberg on Sunday 20th May. The event is a staggered handicap start with the first runners taking off at 10am. Registration is automatic entry into the event for all members.
