Ash Blazes Around Bundoora
The Victorian Cross Country League contested the Athletics Victoria 10km cross country championships at Bundoora last Saturday. With a national standard field assembled the VCCL teams acquitted themselves with distinction in their divisions. The division four team, Oscar Robinson, Ashley Cowan, Matt Grant, Craig Harris and Daniel Lawlor finished second overall to St Stephens in what has become a dire battle for the division four ladder lead. St Stephens hold a slender lead with the season reaching the half way point. The women’s team, Camilla Whishaw, Ashley Brown and Irene James finished a great second, narrowly beaten by Athletics Essendon.
The VCCL club handicapped event, decided on times of each individual, was a close finish with Ashley Cowen running 33:37 to defeat Camilla Whishaw (37:44) by seven seconds and Brigette Humphrey, running with her Nunawading club, in third place. Ashley, a regular with the Victorian Athletic League during the summer, scored his first VCCL victory. The win follows on from his excellent third in the Caruana 8km the previous week. Oscar Robinson put in a powerful run to claim the fastest time with a 32:46 over the hilly grass course. Camilla was the fastest female with her run of 37:44, coming on the back of her recent Launceston 10k time of 36:12.
The Victorian Cross Country League calendar in the near future will be parkruns for the next two weeks followed by the AV relays (Saturday 7/7) at Sandown Park Racecourse.
