The Eye Of The Tiger
The Victorian Cross Country League opened the 2019 winter season at Jells Park with the Athletics Victoria 6k teams relay event. The day started, weather wise, as a reasonable cool day but solid rain mid-event made conditions tougher as the day wore on. The VCCL entered five teams, Open divisions 3, 6, 7 over 40’s and women’s. The three open teams all finished top three, although without a win, showing great signs for season 2019. The girls produced a terrific effort for fifth placing and unfortunately we were unable to field our over 40’s team at Jells.
The next Athletics Victoria event is the St Anne’s Winery 8km. Athletes with the AV XCR Package are automatically entered, others wishing to compete must register on the AV website before May 29th.
The VCCL also conducted a sealed handicap event in conjunction with the relays. The winner was Matt Grant, competing in division three, with a margin of fifteen seconds and a winning time of 20:29. “Tiger” fresh from a VAL summer season recorded his third win with the club, his previous wins being at Westgate and Westerfolds Parks. Matt defeated his division three team mate Oscar Robinson . Oscar ran the fastest VCCL time of the day with a top class 18:59, a minute faster than his 2018 time. Adina Morrow produced one of her best VCCL runs (27:16) to finish third.
This Sunday the VCCL will conduct the first club event of the season, also at Jells Park, enter from the Ferntree Gully Road entrance. The start time is 10am and distance is 6.5km. As it is Mother’s Day we will be conducting presentations as soon as possible.
On each non VCCL or AV weekend the club will be competing in sealed handicap events at the parkrun venues. VCCL members can run anywhere in Australia but must nominate VCCL as their club.
VCCL members are encouraged to introduce their family, friends, workmates or anyone interested in joining a competitive running club to race each weekend, under varying conditions this winter.
