Handicapping Guidelines

By David Page 28 November 2013

Over the course of the 2013 season a set of handicapping guidelines have been developed to provide new and existing runners with some clarity around how handicaps are done and reviewed. A key focus is to handicap as objectively as possible and reward those runners who show consistent effort or improvement. It is acknowledged that we have a diverse group of athletes from the novice junior to the established veteran and the guidelines take into account that different measures need to apply to these groups.

These guidelines were applied for the second half of the 2013 season and for the most part fields got much closer with narrower winning margins. In order to have full transparency the guidelines have been uploaded on to the website and will be used for the 2014 season.

My personal opinion is that the people that stick with the VCCL love the competition that is provided by handicapping running and this drives them to improve regardless of age, experience or ability. If we can foster that competitive nature by providing a level playing field then we will continue to attract and importantly retain new runners.
