Westerfolds Field Done Like Adina

The opening event for the 84th season of the Victorian Cross Country League, the Bob Charlton and Fred Grubb Memorial, in honour of two of the clubs most popular past members was a surprise result to most including the winner Adina Morrow. The first event, a 6.5km sealed handicap, has tradionally been the domain of athletes coming from a solid VAL track season but Adina continued with her improvement to record her second VCCL victory.

She had an eleven second margin over Cody Williamson with a further eleven seconds to Matt Grant in third place. Adina’s previous win was the prestigious George Flack Advisory Classic in 2015. Cody collected the fastest time award with a run of 22:04. Williamson, having enjoyed one of his best track season, was “promoted” into second place after the presentations when a clerical error was discovered. The original second placing went to “Tiger” Grant and his training partner Sven Richter (22:57) made an auspicious VCCL debut in fourth place, also being second fastest overall. Mark O’Brien provided a bumper “top five” dividend by casually sliding into fifth place. Mark later attributed his improved form to the Geelong fresh air and solid training. Actually that’s a lie — he was as shocked as everyone else. Sean Quilty, the club’s 2016 handicapper, was in sixth place narrowly ahead of Janine McKerron and Joel Donnar. Andrew Soltys, making his return to the VCCL, was in ninth place and Olivia Findlay, first of the ladies was tenth. Corina Kapusta was fastest of the females with a time of 27:13.

This Sunday we venture to Karkarook Park for a Moran Stable 5km Sealed Handicap with a 10am start.
