5k Is Right Up Andrew’s Alley

By Brian Marantelli 23 June 2016

Andrew Lane raced away with the Westgate Park 5km Sealed Handicap on Sunday to record his second win with the Victorian Cross Country League. His previous win was also a victory over the same distance, the Helmut Prentler event at Lilydale Lake last season. Andrew, winner of the 2015 VCCL aggregate award has been a very consistent runner over the last two seasons and Sunday’s win comes on the back of a solid second in the Caruana Classic.

Tony Moran in finishing second continued his run of top ten placings, making it six from six starts, fifteen seconds from the winner. Uber’s favourite son Michael Marantelli found the trip from Southbank to Westgate Park within his travel radius and scorched around the tight 5km circuit to finish third and record the fastest overall time with a run of 15:11. Fraser Murray, current leader in this season’s aggregate award, produced another solid run for his fourth place. Janine McKerron in fifth place was the first of the females on handicap and in doing so sits only a few points behind Fraser in the club award. Anthony Glenning followed up his great placing at Greenvale to once again finish close up, twenty nine seconds from the winner. Josh Nolan, seventh, holds his place as leader in the club Championship title and clocked 16:12, second fastest overall. Corina Kapusta (19:05) was the fastest of the females, and Adamo Traini gained the first year member awards.

Many thanks to Mark O’Brien and Tom Hecimovic for their sponsorship of the Westgate race.

This Sunday the club ventures to Woodlands Park for a 10km “staggered” handicap event, start time 10am.
