The Earth Shakes For Sven

Sven Richter collected his first Victorian Cross Country League win on Sunday at Churchill Park when he scored by a narrow margin from Fraser Murray over the tough 5km course. Sven chased Cody Williamson (16:20) all the way in the sealed handicap and recorded the second fastest time of 16:35. After allowing for handicaps Sven had one second to spare over Murray and a further nine seconds to Stephen Menzies. Richter, winner of the 2016 Stawell 3200 metre handicap, is formerly from Tasmania and another athlete from the Mark Hipworth stable. Fraser Murray produced his best VCCL run on Sunday and continues his run of placings with another near miss. Stephen Menzies in third place replicated his third in last year’s event.

The VCCL competed the previous day at Sandown Racecourse in the Athletics Victoria relays with each runner running two laps of the 3.1km course. The day was a success for the Club with the over 50’s (Sean Quilty, Tony Moran and Gary Hall) finishing second and the over 40’s (Craig Harris, David Page and Hugo Sarpa) also runners up. The over 40’s girls (Andrea Ray, Corina Kapusta and Janine McKerron) finished a solid fourth.

Sunday’s race was named in honour of Helmut and Maija Prentler, both stalwarts of the club for many years.

This Sunday is a rest day with the Eric Greaves Memorial 10km at Braeside Park the following Sunday.
