Moran Breaks Winning Drought

Tony Moran, winner of the 2016 Nortons Park Handicap

Tony Moran, after a series of near misses, recorded his first Victorian Cross Country League win since 2013 at Norton’s Park on Sunday. In the small but select field assembled at Wantirna South for the 6.5km handicap, Tony was able to overtake Olivia Findlay in the final four hundred metres to finish with a seven second margin. Moran, a twenty five year veteran of the VCCL, has the enviable record of over three hundred races with a better than fifty percent rate of top ten finishes. Included in those placings are ten wins over all distances and all types of courses.

Olivia Findlay is gradually creeping up the result sheet with a third at Braeside and Sunday’s second, definitely making her an excellent chance over the 5km distance at Jells Park this weekend. Sean Quilty, in third place and the day’s race manager, provided a three lap course which gave the small group of spectators a bird’s eye view as the event unfolded. Fraser Murray crossed the line in fourth place adding another good finish to his impressive season. Mark Beavis, after a slow start to his winter season, made it three good finishes on the trot with his fifth placing. Leon Brooks produced his best finish of the winter to finish sixth, and like his beloved “cats” may have to be happy with that position. Matthew Grant, after taking a tumble on the slippery surface, regained his feet to finish seventh. First year member Adamo Triani made the top ten and once again was awarded the fastest first year time. The fastest overall was Sean Quilty (24:40) from Tony Moran (26:01), with the female award going to Corina Kapusta (27:38).

This week the VCCL conduct a 5k msealed handicap at Jells Park combined with Caulfield Grammar in their annual fund raising event. Start time is 10am.
