Joel Donnar, winner of the 2017 Caruana Cross Country Classic.

Joel Donnar held on narrowly for a hard fought win on Sunday at Woodlands Park to take home the major prize in the Caruana 8km Classsic. Joel took the lead inside the last kilometre of the event and finished with a two second margin over Bendigo’s Adam Parker. It was Joel’s second run with the Victorian Cross Country League this season and an improvement on his first up second at Westerfolds behind Matt Grant. It was also Joel’s second win with the club, his previous being the Moran Stable 5km in 2012.

Adam Parker, who couldn’t quite match Donnar’s speed over the concluding stages was able to finish second, eight seconds to the good of the fast finishing Daniel Lawler. For Daniel it was his fourth top three placing for the season. Matt Grant, having his best season with the club finished in fifth place. Fastest time for the day was Mitchell Cashion with a run of 26:37 and Camilla Whishaw, the fastest of the females with a time of 31:28. Camilla was also the first new member to finish. Adam Parker also finished second in the Bendigo Athletic Club’s sealed handicap, held within the VCCL event. The consistent Greg Hilson was able to claim that prize after handicaps were calculated.

Sunday’s race was the twenty second running of the Caruana 8km at Woodlands Park once again showing the generosity and loyalty of Joe and Machelle Caruana over a long period.

This Sunday the VCCL conduct a 5km handicap at Westgate Park with a start time of 9am.
