Shane Fears No Boundaries

Shane Thiele, winner of the 2017 Westgate Bridge Handicap.

Shane Thiele worked his way through the field from a back mark on the tight Westgate Park circuit to record his first win with the Victorian Cross Country League. Thiele faced a tough challenge throughout the race with fun runner Jacob Reed, off the same handicap, pushing him for line honours. Jacob eventually forged clear to finish five seconds to the good in a sprint to the line. Shane, a regular at VAL and SAAL events during the warmer weather, spends his winters running along chalked lines for the AFL with only an occasional run with the VCCL. Shane received his sash and cheque with new baby Lucas and daughter MacKenzie looking on.

Leon Brooks produced his best 2017 effort with a valiant second place. Daniel Lawlor finished third to make it five minor places for the season. David Stones and Troy Atkins were next with David’s fifth his best of the season and Troy’s sixth, his best finish with the club. Fastest time went to Michael Marantelli (who recently actually tripped over one of those aforementioned chalk lines) with an excellent effort of 15:29 on the tight track. Fastest of the girls was Corina Kapusta with her run of 19:44. Martine Beer won the novice award.

The annual Family Feud trophy event has been omitted from the calendar this season but may still be on later in the season. At this early stage, with Shane in fine form and Claire improving each week, the Thiele family are looking the goods.

The Victorian Cross Country League has a rest this weekend but return for the Yarra Bend 8km at TH Westfield Park on Saturday June 24th with a 9am start.
