On a very cold, wet and windy Saturday morning Ray Barnard took the lead early in the 5km handicap at Jells Park and held on for a comfortable win. In his eleventh season with the Victorian Cross Country League, Ray’s win was his second with the club, the previous win being the 2007 Caruana Classic at Greenvale. Barnard had a fifty four second margin over runner-up Joel Donnar, who’s time of 16:43 was the fastest of the day. Julian Harris returned to form to finish third, his best finish of the season. Sean Quilty was fourth, just clear of training mate Craig Harris. The fastest of the females was Ashley Brown, making her VCCL debut with a nice run of 18:50. Martine Beer was first novice across the line.

This Sunday the VCCL is conducting the 33rd Helmut & Maija Prentler Handicap at Churchill Park, Rowville for a 9am start. Caulfield Grammar will also be taking part in the event.
