Tom Tom Doesn't Get Lost At Dandenong

By Brian Marantelli 5 September 2011

The Thermal Products Handicap with a third change of venue in three weeks was finally decided at the Police Paddocks, Dandenong on Sunday. The winner, Tom Hecimovic, staged a great battle with Leon Brooks and David Haigh over the final 2k before hanging on to win by two seconds. Tom has had a very consistent year with today's win preceded by a second at Lysterfield, a third at Greenvale, a fourth at Jells Park, a fifth overall in the relay and a sixth at Eaglehawk. After the mandatory handicap reduction Tom may have to rely on a seventh at Westgate this Sunday, a race he has won twice previously. David Haigh was a further 5 seconds away in third place, well clear of fourth placed Craig Harris. Haighy is clear prepost favourite for this weeks Westgate 5k sealed handicap. Next in was Matt Grant who was also the fastest time for the event. Matt passed Lisa Roberts in the final few metres to finish fifth. Others in the top ten were Dennis Hughes, David Girolamo, Mark Andrews and Eric Sapac. The novice went to Colin Wight and fastest female to Caitlin Haala.

Many thanks to Tony Parsons who sponsored the event through Thermal Products. Tony, who had been on holidays only just made it back for the race, thanks to his private jet and chauffeur.

This week's race is the Westgate Park Memorial 5k on Sunday, with a 10am start. The race carries a hefty bonus sponsored by Mark O'Brien and Tom Hecimovic.
