Wayne's World A Short Course

By Brian Marantelli 13 September 2011

Wayne James showing an appreciation for the drop back to 5K scored a long awaited win in the 12th Westgate Memorial sealed handicap conducted on Sunday at Westgate Park. Wayne defeated David Haigh by four seconds with a further three seconds to the ever consistent Lisa Roberts. Wayne, having his seventeenth race for the season, has raced consistently since a good effort in the club relay in July. David Haigh, with a string of recent top ten finishes, once again heads to the President's Handicap this Sunday to gain a win before the season closes. David won this race several years ago when the event was held at Jells Park. Lisa Roberts, already a winner this year, has continued to improve and will still be a winning chance on Sunday. Leon Brooks and Craig Harris were once again in the finish with fourth and fifth placings. Nick Harding, struggling most of the year with injury, was sixth across the line just ahead of Matthew Bateman. Olivia Findlay, Ashley Snowden and Joel Donnar completed the top ten placings. Fastest times went to Mark DeCampo and Craig Harris with Corina Kapusta fastest female. The novice prize was once again won by Colin Wight.

The Victorian Cross Country League would like to congratulate Rochelle Kennedy and her coach Gordon Muir on Rochelle's recent 800m silver medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games held last week on the Isle of Man.

The presentation night tickets are available from Lyn McKenzie and payment would appreciated as soon as possible.
