The Victorian Cross Country League is back and running for season 2022. Our season commenced with a parkrun on April 30th with the win going to Adina Morrow from Francis Dowdle. The win was number seven for Adina and for Francis it was his fourth second place in seven starts with the club.

For race two the VCCL ventured to Jells Park for the annual 6km relays in the Athletics Victoria winter competition. Our teams, slightly down in numbers, competed in division 2 (six members), division 5 (4 members) and division 7 with three competitors. Division 2 ran extremely well to finish sixth in a field of thirteen with new Members Finn Russell (19:45), Dan Hopkins (21:32) and Riley Bryce (20:07) sure to add strength to our top team. Great contributions from Oscar Robinson (21:39) and Francis Dowdle (21:40) with Oscar clearly having bragging rights over Francis. Fastest in division 2 was Michael Marantelli (18:45), fourth fastest overall in the division. A strong effort from our division 5 team lead by David Spence (22:58), joined by new member Harry Amos (22:46) and regulars Julian Harris (22:38) and Alex Bacalja (21:47). The team finished third in a highly competitive field of fourteen. Finally, division seven, with one runner short, finished a gallant ninth in a field of fourteen. Great team efforts by Craig Harris (23:55), Adina Morrow (27:22) and Fraser Murray (26:09). With a full team our division 7 team will quickly rise up the rankings.

The sealed handicap conducted on the Jells Park relays was won by Michael Marantelli from Corey Lawson (Mentone) and Ingrid Woodward (Bendigo). Michael running from a minus 2 spot (-20 seconds) won by 8 seconds with another 10 seconds to Ingrid. Finn Russell, having his first VCCL run off the tough handicap of scratch ram extremely well for fourth.

The club has entered teams, besides those above, for Women’s division 4, Over 40’s, Over 60’s as well as an additional Division seven team.

The next two club events are parkrun at any parkrun venue on May 14th and May 21st.

The next AV event is 8k Cross Country at Ravenswood, Bendigo on May 28th.
