The winter cross country season is in full swing and the VCCL have conducted five events – three Parkruns and two Athletics Victoria events. Adina Morrow, competing at Diamond Creek, opened the season with her Parkrun win on April 30th, followed by Michael Marantelli winning the sealed handicap event at Jells Park.

The third event, a parkrun, was won by Russell Johnson running at the You Yangs venue. Julian Harris ran a PB (17:20) in winning the fourth event at Albert Park parkrun.

Last Saturday the club contested the Athletics Victoria 8km event at St Anne’s Winery in Ravenswood. The VCCL fielded three teams although the division 5 and women’s teams only had one runner in each. The division two team preformed magnificently finishing third to Mentone and Frankston. VCCL fastest time went to Michael Marantelli (26:10) but a consistent team effort from Finn Russell (27:26), Riley Bryce (27:41), Dan Lawlor (28:37), Matt Grant (29:33) and Oscar Robinson (29:45) enabled the boys to tally a good overall average for their placing. David Spence (33:25) flew the flag solo in division five to finish 7th and gain valuable points. On David’s performance, with a full team the VCCL would have finished second.Irene James (46:30) represented the club in the women’s event and Irene also gained good points with her solo performance.

The club sealed handicap conducted on the 8km cross country course through the vines of St Anne’s Winery was won by Dan Lawlor from Michael Marantelli and Finn Russell. Dan won by eighteen seconds from Michael with Finn a similar distance in third. Dan, former winner of the Eric Greaves Memorial and Club aggregate collected his fourth VCCL win.

Next week’s event is a parkrun followed by the Joe Caruana Memorial 3km on June 12th at Woodlands Park, Greenvale. It would be great to see everyone at Greenvale in recognition of Joe for the incredible amount of work he did for the VCCL over many years.

Runners please remember that for all future AV events ALL ATHLETES regardless of your XC package must enter through the AV portal before the Wednesday (noon) of the event.
