Davis Avoids Capture At Police Paddocks

The Victorian Cross Country League conducted the 28th Helmut and Maija Prentler 8km at the Police Paddocks on Sunday where the weather looked bleak but thankfully the rain stayed away.

Collingwood Football Club have enjoyed a great deal of success over the last few years but their number one ticket holder Colin Daisy Davis has spent much of that time out of the spotlight. On Sunday Colin returned to the winners list with a clear win in the sealed handicap. Colin has gradually been on the improve this season with good placings in the first four races including a fourth in the Caruana Classic. His last win was the 2007 Fairfield 10km, also a sealed handicap. Colin’s winning margin was twenty seconds from the ever consistent Lisa Roberts with a further nine seconds to Corina Kapusta. David Haigh continues to run well with a solid fifth and must have a clear lead in the VCCL aggregate award. Irene James recorded her first placing for the year with her tenth to finish just ahead of the novice award winner Matthew Grant. Gary Blake, Tony Parsons, David Girolamo and Ashley Snowden maintained their early season form to again collect prize money. Another whose name continues to appear in the top ten is Tony Rendina with his ninth placing, a win surely must be drawing near. The fastest time cheques went to David Spence from David Haigh with Corina Kapusta winning the female category.

The only low point on the day was that Colin’s little brother Wayne once again failed to win a prize in the VCCL raffle. Wayne’s last raffle victory at Lilydale 2010, where he secured the highly sought after canned peaches, must seem like light years ago. Wayne believes he still has a big raffle prize left in him before the season finishes.

Helmut and Maija have been competitors over a long period and generous sponsors for the last twenty eight years. Many thanks once again for their continuing support. Also to Roy McKenzie, who marked the course on Saturday afternoon.

This week the annual VCCL relay will be staged at Norton’s Park, Wantirna with a 10am start. The teams will be available on the VCCL website forum later in the week. If you are not listed in a team and wish to run, you can still be slotted in on Sunday by informing Mark O’Brien on the day. Prizes are award to the three teams first across the line as well as the three teams on handicaps.

The 80th anniversary event will be conducted at Woodland’s Park, Greenvale on June 24th, 10am start. Please pass the word to former members and encourage as many as possible to come along.
