Marcus Boxall cleared out over the final stages to take out the Norm Charles 10km classic at Lysterfield Park on Sunday. Marcus, after an extremely consistent season won the forty seventh staging of the event by fifty seconds from Tony Parsons and Eric Sapac. Boxall took the lead from Parsons and Dennis Hughes with a mile to travel and was untroubled to record his best win with the Victorian Cross Country League, his third win overall. The winner’s prize was the largest of the season $1200. The surprise run in the race was the improved performance of past winner, Dennis Hughes. Dennis took advantage of his handicap to work to the front early and still looked a great winning chance until claimed by the winner. Tony Parsons continued on with his consistent Norm Charles performances with his second place coming on the back of a third last year and a seventh in 2010. Eric Sapac, quickly developing into one of the clubs backmarkers, ran a terrific race to finish third. Eric also claimed the second fastest time award, with the top honour going to David Spence in the time of 34:19. Spence finished fourth, just ahead of Dennis Hughes and club Stalwart Tony Moran. The fastest woman was Corina Kapusta (38:37) from Fiona Ely in 49:19. Corina also finished in the top ten. Matthew Grant finished just out of the top ten but claimed the novice award. The age awards went to Dennis Hughes, Tony Moran and David Haigh.

The short priced pre-race favourite, Tony Rendina was a late scratching with a gastric complaint. Tony has assured his followers that he will be back better than ever and expects to collect the winner’s cheque at Kyneton.

Next week is the Eric Greaves Memorial 10km at Braeside Park, a combined event with the Masters, 10am start. The following week on the fifth of August we will be racing at Jells Park and honouring long time member Tony Moran with the Tony Moran Legend event.
