Whitecross Neutralises Opposition

Greg Whitecross, winner of the 2012 Eric Greaves Memorial.

Greg ‘Floater’ Whitecross scored his first Victorian Cross Country League win on Sunday in the Eric Greaves Memorial 10km at Braeside Park. The race was a combined event with the Victorian Masters and is named in honour of Eric Greaves who was a great competitor and official for both organisations.

Greg, who has contested every VCCL event this season, makes the weekly trip from Ballarat to compete and scored a well deserved victory from Irene James and David Haigh. Greg’s best performance before Sunday was a ninth at Lilydale but at Braeside he was able to score by a clear margin of twenty nine seconds in the sealed handicap. Whitecross also competes with the VAL throughout the summer where he has had considerably success. Last year’s winner, Irene James showed her liking for the course with her best run for the season. Another to show her best form was Fiona Ely with a handy fourth just ahead of Duncan Whitford and the ever consistent Corina Kapusta. Corina was once again the fastest female with David Haigh and Matt Grant taking the overall fastest times. The novice award went to first year runner John Green, also from Ballarat.

Next week we race at Jells Park where we conduct the Tony Moran Legend Handicap 8km with a 10am start.

The following week (August 12th) we run a combined event with Bendigo Athletic Club at the Kyneton Ridge Estate Winery. The race will start at the winery, travel through Blackhill Reserve with an uphill finish back at the winery. Runners please enter the winery from Blackhill Road (not Blackhill School Road). Driving from Melbourne, take the second Kyneton exit, turn right at the first roundabout, back over the freeway. Turn right into Hallorans lane and then left into Blackhill Road. There are blue Kyneton Ridge Estate road signs along the way. The start time is 10.30am.

There are limited numbers of Presentation Night tickets available – please contact Lyn McKenzie. The date is Saturday 6th October at Waverley RSL.

The Victorian Cross Country League would like to welcome our newest members. Congratulations to Murray and Sonia Harding with the arrival of twin daughters, India and Harper. They join Jamieson and Shakira who have promised to share their unlimited bags of Tiny Teddys.
