Winner For One Please James

By Brian Marantelli 8 August 2012

Irene James wins the Tony Moran ‘Legend’ Handicap 2012.

Irene James scored a narrow but convincing win in the Tony Moran 8km at Jells Park on Sunday as she held out the fast finishing Tony Parsons and Tony Rendina. Irene’s win came on the back of an excellent second in the Eric Greaves Memorial the previous Sunday and was her second win with the Victorian Cross Country League. James held on in a bunched finish with only thirteen seconds separating the first seven placings. Kevin Pardy, in his first season with the VCCL, had his best finish with a handy fourth and showed he was capable of winning before the season closes. Another to record a club best run was Celia Cosgriff with a top ten finish and promise of more to come. Celia comes to the cross country with an impressive VAL track record. Matt Grant once again collected the novice prize with another consistent finish, just outside the top ten. The fastest time awards went to David Haigh (29:00), Craig Harris (30:03) and Corina Kapusta winning the ladies award (31:28). Tony Moran ran a great race to finish seventh in the race named in his honour. Tony has been a member, committee member, club captain and champion over a period of nearly thirty years.

This week we race in a combined event with the Bendigo Athletic Club at the Kyneton Ridge Estate Winery. The 6.5km race follows a scenic out and back course from the winery through the Black Hill Reserve and finishing on the ridge overlooking the vines. The Victorian Cross Country League thanks Pauline Russell and John Boucher for the opportunity to conduct an event in such pleasant surroundings. The event starts at 10:30am and fun runners are welcome. Please enter the winery from Blackhill Road (not Blackhill School Road). Driving from Melbourne, take the second Kyneton exit, turn right at the first roundabout, back over the freeway. Turn right into Hallorans Lane and then left into Blackhill Road. There are blue Kyneton Ridge Estate road signs along the way.

Presentation night tickets are selling fast. Please let Lyn know of your numbers, etc. The annual $1000 draw tickets are available, and hopefully everyone can be involved.
