Tony Rendina overcame his recent run of bad luck in cross country events to take out the Kyneton Ridge Estate 6.5km handicap at Kyneton on Sunday. Tony, after running a great second at Bendigo and third at Murchison, was able to throw his demons aside and survive the long uphill finish to win comfortably by forty seconds.

Rendina defeated Wayne James and Bendigo runner Peter Lebusque in his first win for several seasons. Wayne James’ second was his best run for the season and follows on from wife Irene’s win last week. Other than Lebusque, Bendigo supplied runners in the top ten with Austin Beamish, Tony Sait, Adam Parker and Greg Hilson all featuring. The fastest times also went to Bendigo with Josh Sait and Adam Parker running 22:56 and 24:44. The fastest female award went to local athlete Christine Wooley and the novice awards went to Kevin Pardy and Kate Van Olphen.

The event which started and finished in the winery after travelling through the Black Hill Reserve was run in perfect conditions with most staying on to enjoy the local hospitality.

The race was sponsored by the Hipworth Stable, Dennis Hughes and Gordon Muir’s Flying Start fitness centre. The generosity of these club members is greatly appreciated by all runners who competed.

The Victorian Cross Country League would like to thank Pauline Russell and John Boucher of Kyneton Ridge Estate Winery for their hospitality and the Macedon Shire for use of the reserve.

This Sunday the VCCL returns to Lysterfield Park for the George Perdon 10 mile event and 6.5km sweepstake event. The club will also be joined by Caulfield Grammar athletes who are competing as fun runners for a charity event.
