Luis Flies Over Westgate

2012 Westgate H’cap winner Luis Fabres with Pres. Brian Marantelli

The Westgate Memorial 5km Sealed Handicap was taken out by first year athlete Luis Fabres from Tony Rendina and Gordon Muir. Luis won by ten seconds from Tony with a further fifteen seconds to Gordon. Tony Moran was only a second further away in fourth place. Luis has quickly become a part of the VCCL scene and since joining has only missed the Kyneton event, preferring to tackle the tough City to Surf in Sydney. Tony Rendina who seems to have recovered from his confrontation with the tree at Murchison has struck top form and looks likely to figure prominently for the remaining races. With only three events before the season finishes competitors are running out of chances to land a race win. Regular placegetters Tony Moran, Eric Sapac, Mark Howard, Craig Harris and Tony Parsons are sure to make the competition close in September. The fastest times were recorded by David Spence (16:29) and Phillip O’Brien (16:55) with Corina Kapusta once again taking the fastest female award with a run of 18:40. The novice award went Santhy Olowoniyi. The highlight of the day was the thrashing that fun runner Donovan Quilty handed out to his father Sean, a former Olympian.

Many thanks to Tom Hecimovic and Mark O’Brien for their contributions towards the first prize bonus.

The $1000 draw tickets are available. As this is the only fundraiser that the club conducts it is hoped that everyone gets involved by seeing Dennis Hughes for a ticket.

Presentation night tickets are selling fast, see Lyn McKenzie for a seat at the social event of the year. Lyn would like all those with tickets to have payment finalised before the final race at Westerfolds.

This week’s race is a 6.5km staggered start at Coburg Lake with the start time 10am on Sunday. The event is sponsored by Gary Parkes, Dennis Hughes and Vicki Frampton.
