Gary Glitters At Westerfolds

Gary Blake, winner of the 2012 President’s H’cap

The final event for the 2012 Victorian Cross Country League season was a sealed 6.5km handicap at Westerfolds Park and the winner Gary Blake was able to run a well controlled race to score by nine seconds from Craig Harris and Tony Rendina a further six seconds away in third place. Gary ran his own race but had to contend with the astute Tony Rendina tracking him for the majority of the race. Rendina, knowing a close finish him would give him the win and guarantee the aggregate award was not able to sustain the effort and tired over the last kilometre. Tony’s third was however enough to deliver the aggregate. The Westerfolds win was Blake’s second for the season, following on from his win at Warringal Park in May. Craig Harris, after another very consistent season had to be content with second, but as the first over forty year old runner (other than the winner), Craig is the winner of the Ted Paulin over 40’s award. Matt Grant, lucky enough to be dropped off at the Westerfolds Park gate by the night rider ran a very good fourth, his best run with the VCCL. The fastest times awards went to Luke Searle (22:42) and Grant Penney (23:55), with Corina Kapusta running 25:45 to be the fastest female. The novice award went to Keleigh Robinson.

The VCCL would like to congratulate Irene James, Greg Whitecross and Roy McKenzie on completing the entire 20 races of the cross country year.

With the racing over we only have the social events to complete the VCCL year. The presentation night is at Waverley RSL on the October 6th and the AGM will be held at the McKinnon Hotel on October 21st, with a 10am start.

The $1000 draw will be conducted at the presentation night. Please remember to bring the ticket butts and money on the night.

The Committee of the Victorian Cross Country League would like to thank all that took part in the 2012 season and hope to see you next year.
