Start To Finish Win For Schultz

By David Page 6 May 2013

Richard Schultz, winner of the 2013 Caruana Classic.

Bendigo Stalwart Richard Schultz (41:14) ran strongly and led the 18th Annual Caruana Handicap from start to finish to record a 16 second win over the 8km distance. Joe Caruana, true to his word, managed to mark out a reasonably flat course that provided some entertaining racing. Steve Smith (37:45) continued his good form but could never quite bridge the gap, and Gemma Kennesey in her first race for the year showed she has turned up in good shape coming third. Mara got some competition for fastest time (26:38) from Josh Sait (26:46) and Phil O’Brien (27:40) while Gemma (30:18) and Corina Kapusta (30:27) went head to head all the way to record the fastest female times.

A big field of athletes greeted the starter including a number of fun runners and the attack on the bar and the canteen afterwards was unprecedented with Joe having to do a beer run before presentations.

Thanks goes to all of the Bendigo runners that came down to support this race and special mention to Eddie McGuire who took some leave from his presidential duties to course marshal for the day. One can only hope that Mara (Snr) takes a leaf from Eddie’s book and takes some leave from his leave to do his Presidential duties.

Next week is a break for Mothers Day and we wish all the Mum’s in the club a great day and enjoy your Sunday morning sleep in. The following week (19 May) we are off to Warringal Park, Heidelberg for the 24th Rendina Family Handicap over 8km at the usual time of 10.00am.
