Oh Danny Boy

Daniel Veith, winner of the 2013 Independent Signs H’cap.

A very deserving Daniel Veith saluted the judges for his maiden victory in the 20th Independent Signs Handicap. Having been very close on a number of occasions this season Veith (37:35) saved his best performance for the challenging Woodlands course beating his coach Mark Hipworth (37:49) to the line with another consistent performer, Leon Brooks (41:23) third.

The conditions at Woodlands were near perfect and Joe Caruana managed to mark out a course that avoided the Sportsbet ‘Wallaby v Lions’ advertisement although Leanne was spied putting the VCCL logo on it so our lawyers have been advised.

Luke Searle (34:33) ran a strong race to record fastest time from Shane Thiele (34:50) with Marra proving that coming off the bye is a disadvantage. Corina Kapusta (39:26) led all female athletes with Santhy Olowoniyi showing she is close to her best with a close 4th.

Next week will see the 5km specialists return for the Jim McLure ‘Legend’ Handicap at Lillydale Lake and a very close finish is expected. As always fun runners are welcome and this is a great event for those who might be lacking a little fitness to come and have a run and also a great spectators event so bring the family out.
