Bank’s Interest Rate Rises At Murchison

Richard Banks, winner of the 40th Murchison H‘cap in 2013.

Richard Banks returned to the winners’ list on Sunday with a strong win at Murchison in the 10km road event. The 40th and final running was well attended and Banks entered the football ground a clear leader but second placed Phil Noden rattled home to keep the winning margin to twelve seconds. Banks, having his first season with the Victorian Cross Country League since 2008, has been ultra consistent in his comeback, competing in all eleven 2013 races for eight top ten finishes before Sunday’s win. Richard’s previous win was at Westerfolds Park in the 2007 Presidents Handicap. Richard also collected a bonus of $200, provided by club sponsor Norm Charles for being the first VCCL runner across the line.

Noden made up good late ground to pass Gerry O’Donnell on the lap of the football ground with Leon Brooks running another solid placing for fourth. The next four runners in were all Bendigo competitors with Adam Parker, Tony Sait, Jeremy Boulton and Grant Findlay finishing ahead of the first female home Irene James. Veteran Lionel Stewart completed the top ten. Kylie Donnar claimed the first novice prize with her eleventh placing holding out number one son Joel six seconds behind her. The fastest times were all Bendigo with Josh Sait recording 33:39 from Phil Noden 33:44, Adam Parker 35:46 and fastest female Stacey Clarkson 41:22.

The Murchison event, sponsored on the main by Doug Tuhan, has been a cornerstone of the VCCL season for the last forty years and unfortunately will not be conducted next season. The Victorian Cross Country League would like to thank Doug, his son Michael, his co sponsors and his many helpers for making the event happen for all those years. Doug’s contribution to sport and the community in the Murchison area is testament to his character and willingness to be involved.

Next Sunday the VCCL race at Churchill Park, Rowville with a 10am start over the 6.5km journey. Fun runners welcome, entry $15.
