Wayne Shows True Grit

Wayne James, winner of the 2013 President’s Handicap.

The final event of the 2013 Victorian Cross Country League season, the President’s Sealed Handicap, was conducted at Westerfolds Park on Sunday. The winner was the ever consistent Wayne James who scored narrowly from 2012 winner Gary Blake and Daniel Veith. Wayne had seven seconds to spare over Blake and in doing so put the seasons aggregate trophy safely in his keeping. James’ year included an earlier win at Lysterfield over 8000 metres and several top ten placings.

Gary Blake, having a quieter year than in previous seasons, produced his best effort of the year and only just missed winning his third President’s handicap. Daniel Veith, the big improver throughout the year, finished a great third and recorded the second fastest time over the line. Daniel is sure to have a very productive summer track season. Mark Andrews, another with a very consistent season, was in fourth place and still chases that elusive first win. Andrew Lane in his first VCCL season recorded his first top ten finish with a solid run to finish sixth, just ahead of Andrew Soltys and Kylie Donnar. Brigitte Seeley, the fastest female on the day, was another first year member to record her first top ten finish in the final race. Sean Quilty and Joel Donnar completed the first ten placings with Sean also clocking the fastest time overall. The novice prize went to Anthony Whitby in eleventh position.

The VCCL would like to thank all its members, officials, timers, race managers, social club members and sponsors for their part in another successful winter season. We hope to see everyone at the Presentation Night on Saturday, 5th October and/or the AGM on Sunday, 20th October. If not, we wish all a merry Christmas and look forward to another great season in 2014.
