Four Wins In Marcus’s Box Set

By Brian Marantelli 16 July 2014

Marcus Boxall, winner of the inaugural Myrniong H’cap in 2014.

The Victorian Cross Country League left the comfort of the suburbs for Sunday’s event to discover a magnificent hidden location that rivals any venue where the club has competed in recent years. The Lake Dewar YMCA Lodge in Myrniong and host Greg Mason provided a warm welcome, great course, terrific scenery and ideal weather, making for an enjoyable day all round. The 6.5km course which included a lap around the lake provided a close finish with Marcus Boxall prevailing by eight seconds from the fast finishing Shane Grund and novice runner Robert Eppinger.

After a relatively slow start to the season Marcus has hit top form in his last three runs with two excellent seconds before Sunday’s win. For Marcus it was his fourth VCCL win since joining the club in 2007, with his best win definitely the 2012 Norm Charles Classic. Besides his four wins he has been extremely consistent with twenty eight top ten finishes.

In second place, Shane Grund in his first season continues to climb the finish list with another impressive performance. Robert Eppinger also continues to show improvement with his third being his best placing in his novice season. Sean Quilty, regaining his old form finished a solid fourth marginally ahead of Leon Brooks and David Spence. David Page, Chris Brown, David Haigh and Wayne James completed the top ten. Fearing legal action, best to say that quartet ran well and should figure in future events.

The fastest times went to David Spence (22:04) and Shane Grund (22:36) with Corina Kapusta (25:54) once again the fastest of the ladies. The novice prize went to Travis Dosser, collecting his first prize with the club.

A notable absentee from Sunday’s event was chief raffle ticket enforcer, part time handicapper, recent Geelong football supporter and tireless club worker, Tony Rendina. It’s hoped that Tony’s macramé classes will revert to Saturdays for the rest of the season.

Many thanks must go to Greg Whitecross for his work in discovering the venue and mapping out a well received course. Hopefully the venue can be on the VCCL calendar for years to come.

This week the VCCL race at Braeside Park and are joined by the Victorian Masters and Victorian Business Runners for the annual Eric Greaves Memorial 10km.

Finally, an update on our intrepid travellers. Machelle, Leanne and Evie are happy to report that they have left the bar at Tullamarine departure lounge, are having a “ball”, are sober (some of the time) and have, as yet, not needed embassy assistance.
