Woods Fights On Like A Tiger At Churchill

David Woods registered his second Victorian Cross Country League win at Churchill Park on Sunday when he battled on doggedly to hold out the fast finishing Shane Grund. Woods took the lead after the 5km point and had a forty second lead over the field as he raced into the final kilometre. Grund was in second place at that stage and looked capable of making up the leeway but fell short by five metres. Leon Brooks continued his consistent form to finish third with Sean Quilty, steadily climbing up the leader board, in fourth position. The newly engaged David Spence was next in and also registered the fastest time with a run of 22:02. Marcus Boxall and David Haigh hit the line together for sixth and seventh with “Haighy” just failing to catch Marcus. David Stones was eighth and equalled his best finish with the club. Mark Andrews and Mark Howard completed the top ten placings with Colm Rothery winning the novice award in thirteenth position. The fastest female was once again Corina Kapusta with a run of 26:06.

“Woodsy’s” win came just in time as he heads off to Scotland for a working holiday. He also hopes to compete at a couple of the highland games venues whilst there. David has the ideal occupation for a professional foot runner, an actor.

Congratulations to Stephanie Mollica and David Spence on their recent engagement,. Everyone at the VCCL wishes them the very best for the future.

This week the VCCL travels to Greenvale for the 5km Jayen Engineers Handicap at Woodlands Park with a 10am start.
