Shane Runs Opposition Into The Grund

By Brian Marantelli 12 August 2014

Shane Grund, winner of the 2014 Gerdon Perdon H’cap.

Shane Grund having his twelfth start in his first season with the VCCL, led from barrier to post in the George Perdon ten mile sealed handicap at the Avondale Heights on Sunday. Shane recorded the fastest time of 57:43 and then, after the handicaps were calculated, was still able to hold a thirteen second margin to win his first club event. Shane, coming from a casual running background, has adapted to the Victorian Cross Country League style of competition and with that has come rapid improvement throughout the season. Further proof of his improvement is that Sunday’s kilometre rate of 3:35 was very similar to his shorter course runs.

Running “tragic” Mark Hipworth, competing in his fourth Perdon handicap, ran his best ever ten mile event to finish second, ten seconds to the good of Sean Quilty who continues to gain form as the season progresses. David Haigh, better known as the “sealed handicap number cruncher” carried his abacus across the line in fourth place. Marcus Boxall, gearing up for his second Norm Charles handicap, led a congested group in for the final top ten placings. Following behind Marcus were Ian Cayzer, Leon Brooks, Greg Foran and Mark Andrews. Wayne James finished tenth, his third for the season and last week’s winner Kylie Harding just missed the top ten. Anthony Glenning was the novice award winner and Ally Rose Ogden claimed the fastest female prize with an excellent run of 69:52.

The VCCL would like to thank Keith Lofthouse, John and Julie Hertz for providing the extra cash bonus which enabled the placings to be paid down to fifteenth.

Runners please seek out Greg Foran for the $1000 draw, this is the main fund raiser for the club and helps to ensure our prizemoney remains the best in cross country running.

This week is the sealed 5km Westgate Bridge Handicap at Westgate Park in Port Melbourne with a 10am start.
