David Woods, winner of the Helmut and Maija Prentler 6.5km in late July, returned from his working holiday in Great Britain to record consecutive wins with a strong victory at Kyneton on Sunday. David, who writes, directs and performs for his theatre company Ridiculusmus, has been in Edinburgh since his Rowville win with his latest theatre production. The title “The Eradication of Schizophrenia in Western Lapland” itself implies that he should be right at home on the professional running scene. The event conducted for the third year at the Kyneton Estate Ridge winery starts outside the cellar door, travels through the Blackhill Reserve and finishes back in the winery. Woods entered the winery in front and handled the uphill finish of six hundred metres with ease to win by ten seconds.

Brigette Seeley, after being headed by Woods before the entrance to the winery, chased solidly in the final stages for second place. Tony Moran was third only metres behind Brigette. The first of the Bendigo Athletic Club runners was Adam Parker only a second behind Moran. The season’s most consistent competitor, Leon Brooks, was next in with Bendigo duo Phil Noden and Brett Gilligan amongst the prize money. Once again David Haigh was in the top ten in eighth place ahead of the backmarker Michael Marantelli and Mark Hipworth in tenth. Marantelli was also fastest time with a run of 21:13. Phil Noden was next quickest at 22:52 with Brigette Seeley the fastest of the females in 26:05. The novice award went to Bendigo’s Daniel Ryan in the handy time of 24:19

The event was co-sponsored by the Victorian Cross Country League and the running stable of Mark Hipworth. The VCCL once again thank the Hippo Athletic Club for their continued sponsorship and great support of the season’s events each year. The VCCL and runners would also like to thank the great hospitality of Pauline and John who welcome us each year and permit the club to use their facilities.

The season finishes this Sunday with the running of the sealed 6.5km President’s Handicap at Westerfolds Park, start time is 10am. The social club will be providing lunch for all those interested in staying behind for the presentations.
