Life’s Not Meant To Be Easy For Fraser At Westerfolds

By Brian Marantelli 23 September 2014

Fraser Murray, winner of the 2014 President’s Handicap.

In his first season of cross country competition, Fraser Murray left his best to last as he broke through for his maiden win at Westerfolds Park on Sunday. Fraser had twenty two seconds to spare over David Haigh and a further fifteen seconds to the good of Tony Moran. Murray has taken to the Victorian Cross Country League style of racing with ease and in his thirteen events this season he has managed gradual improvement, including a recent eighth place before Sunday’s win.

David Haigh, going for his third victory in the President’s handicap, produced another consistent effort for his second place. David was the winner of the Ted Paulin sash for being the first over forty member home, outside the winner. The season has finished too soon for Tony Moran with his third place at Westerfolds making it three in a row in that finishing position. Wayne James, last season’s winner at Westerfolds, put in his best run of the season for fourth place. Olivia Findlay was the first female home in fifth place inches to the good of the improving David Page. Olivia was also the fastest of the ladies with a time of 29:05. Next in was novice Troy Atkins with a very commendable run of 24:04 for the hilly 6.5k course. In eighth and ninth place were the back makers Phillip O’Brien and Michael Marantelli with Phillip winning that dual by a second. Leon Brooks completed the top ten and sealed the club aggregate award with another solid effort. The overall fastest time went to Michael Marantelli with his run of 21:28 with Phil O’Brien next best at 22:42.

As the VCCL racing season came to an end with Sunday’s event, members are reminded that the Presentation Night is being held this year at the Bentleigh Club on October 4th. All VCCL members and friends are welcome to come along and finish the season in style.

The Victorian Cross Country League’s AGM will this year be held at the “Library at the Dock” in the Docklands area on Sunday October 19th with a 10:30am start. Directions: Travel along Bourke St, past Etihad Stadium right to the end. Park near Waterside place, a laneway that will take you to the wharf. Follow the wharf along the water for 200 metres to the Docklands library. Unfortunately, even on a Sunday, the parking is metered. Also about a 15 minute walk from Spencer Street station.

Finally the VCCL committees, general and social, would like to thank the athletes, officials, helpers, course markers, friends and sponsors for making 2014 a successful and enjoyable season for athletes. We look forward to seeing everyone back next year for a bigger a better calendar.
